Laurence Sillars’ photographs are most often taken at the extreme northern and southern edges of the UK and its coastline. Islands have brought a particular fascination and he is drawn to their perceived isolation, endurance and fragility, along with the constant conversation between land and sea.

His photographs typically incorporate water and have been likened to drawings with chalk or charcoal. They are concerned with the details of a place, the fleeting occurrences or moments that make somewhere what it is and yet are unlikely to be repeated or present tomorrow.

Laurence is also a curator and writer. He studied art history in London and has worked in museums and galleries since the late 1990s. He lives in the north east of England and was recipient of the 2023 Winter Residency at the Island Darkroom, Isles of Lewis.
